Myrtle's release

Top on the list of things to do today were to attend the release of Myrtle, the turtle, who has been here on the island for the last 6 weeks. She was found up by Port Douglass, stuck in the mud, and was injured so she was brought here to the Turtle Rehabilitation Center on Fitzroy Island. When we checked in yesterday, there was a sign notifying guests that they could accompany the marine biologists on her release at 10:45am at White Rock Beach. So off we went at 9am to make sure we didn’t miss it.

We were all pretty excited to be able to see this. I wasn’t feeling so great but rallied, there was no way I was missing this. I lounged on the rocks while the kids and Bill snorkeled and took in the beauty of the coral, fish, sting rays, reef sharks, deadly jellyfish. . . .you see why I stayed on shore?! Anyway, time came and it was awesome! I missed the water portion of it since I was not going in, but as you might have guessed, Zach was right there. Following little Myrtle out to make sure she made it back into the Coral Sea. I was thrilled to see his video — had no idea he was even filming any of it! Of course, we had him turn it into a school project.

I haven’t posted a video on here before, hoping it works!

You can see we weren’t the only tourists excited for this opportunity.

She has a big blue tracker on her shell. I have told the kids, surely someone (get on it kids) can invent something smaller and less noticeable.
